Scotch Bonnet Hot Sauce Canada
Looking for Scotch Bonnet hot sauce in Canada? Start with where the pepper comes from. Nerpy's grows its Scotch Bonnets on our family farm in St. Catherine, Jamaica, then makes the hot sauce in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Real Jamaican Scotch Bonnets, from our family farm to the bottle.
Built on the Real Pepper
Nerpy's founder Michael Burgess was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and spent many days on his grandfather's farm in Clarendon, learning about the produce, fruits and vegetables used in Caribbean cooking. When he founded Nerpy's in Richmond Hill in 2008, the non-negotiable was the pepper itself: real Jamaican Scotch Bonnets — not the cayenne and chili extract many mass-market sauces are built on. Since 2018, those Scotch Bonnets have come from our own 4-acre family farm in St. Catherine, Jamaica.
Why Nerpy's Scotch Bonnet Hot Sauce
- Our family Scotch Bonnet farm. 4 acres in St. Catherine, Jamaica, growing since 2018. The Scotch Bonnets in our Gold Very Hot Sauce, pepper powder and flakes are grown there. Our pepper tradition comes from Clarendon, where Michael learned from his grandfather.
- The pepper, quantified. Scotch Bonnet runs 100,000–350,000 Scoville Heat Units — floral, fruity and unmistakable.
- Award-winning Scotch Bonnet heat. Our Gold Very Hot Sauce won 1st place in the Hot category at the 2019 Heatwave Hot Sauce Expo and was rated 9/10 for taste by Tasting the Heat. Nerpy's also earned 2019 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair ribbons in the Hot and Extra Hot categories and the 2025 Alla Salute Canadian Magazine Award of Excellence — Best Canadian Hot Sauce.
- Twice in Toronto Life. Our Red Hot Sauce was named one of the 20 Best Toronto-Made Hot Sauces (2019), and Pay Chen named our jerk paste a staple in her Toronto Life Kitchen Diaries feature (2024).
- In approximately 150 stores. Metro, Sobeys and Farm Boy across Ontario, plus Metro online and Uber Eats.
- In professional kitchens too. Gold and Red are available nationally through Gordon Food Service.
- Clean label. Certified gluten-free (lab-tested), vegan, no MSG, no artificial ingredients. Ontario Made certified.
The Scotch Bonnet Guide
Scotch Bonnet vs. habanero
Cousins, not twins. Both sit in a similar heat range (100,000–350,000 SHU), but Scotch Bonnet is fruitier and more floral — it's the signature pepper of Jamaican cooking. Habanero is sharper and more widely grown commercially. When you're shopping, check the label: a true Scotch Bonnet sauce names the pepper.
Where Scotch Bonnet sits on the Scoville scale
- Jalapeño: 2,500–8,000 SHU
- Serrano: 10,000–25,000 SHU
- Cayenne: 30,000–50,000 SHU
- Habanero: 100,000–350,000 SHU
- Scotch Bonnet: 100,000–350,000 SHU
That's roughly 12 to 140 times hotter than a jalapeño — with a rounded, building heat rather than a sharp spike.
